What is SALT Academy?
We are a non-profit performing arts institution in Historic Downtown Gresham providing education in the disciplines of dance, voice, music and theatre. Our program consists of daily classes, a major theatrical production during the summer, smaller quarterly productions, semi-annual recitals and summer camps. Students of SALT Academy range from age 3 through high school - we even have adult theatre, dance and fitness classes!
Our mission is to cultivate creativity in our community by providing access to fun and affordable education in the performing arts. We endeavor to make this opportunity available to all who desire to learn regardless financial means and welcome students from all walks of life. The meaning of “SALT” is “Saturating the Arts with Love and Truth.” Surrounded by love and acceptance, our students are provided a safe environment to grow in while learning how to work hard to achieve goals, develop a sense of community and the value of respect and gratitude.
The Performing Arts classes we offer change slightly each year but for the most part remain in the four categories previously mentioned. Examples include:
Dance – jazz, ballet, lyrical, tap, hip-hop, worship, Mexican folk
Voice – private voice lessons, choir, vocal ensemble
Music – drum, guitar, piano
Theatre – Drama I, II, III
SALTPAC is our specialty group of performing arts students selected by audition only. They are an elite group of highly dedicated performers who often hold leading roles in productions throughout the year and are expected to be the face of SALT Academy to the community.
When SALT Academy was founded we started with about seven kids - four of which were our own. The other three are still with us today nearly ten years later. Our original mission was simply to provide a safe, healthy and positive environment for kids (and adults) to immerse themselves in the performing arts. Little did we know the impact it would have years later.
We’ve found students forming wonderful lifelong friendships while watching them grow emotionally, mentally and even spiritually. Many have achieved a sense of confidence and belonging they never thought possible. From classes to rehearsals and performances, we’re constantly in awe of how our simple vision has been such a positive influence in these young lives.
SALT Academy is very active in the community, regularly participating in local annual events such as the Gresham Art Walk, Troutdale Summerfest Parade and Gresham’s Spirit of Christmas gala. We also have had the recent honor of singing the national anthem for Gresham’s new baseball team, the Gresham Grey Wolves. Since opening in 2007 we have established many strong relationships with area businesses and the community at large and are members of the Gresham Chamber of Commerce, Gresham Center for the Arts Foundation and the Historic Downtown Gresham Business Association.
