Writing and Directing Camp 101Ages 12+
This camp is the first in a series of three week-long intensive writing camps and focuses on play writing with a minor focus on other components necessary to produce a play. The student will learn the basic fundamentals of how to develop a story line (plot), character build, dialog structure, manuscript format, and how to take a story through from beginning to end.
Each student will learn principles of directing. Because it’s important to understand the workings of stage theatre, they will also learn the basic roles of all involved in producing a play.
Each student will have an opportunity to present his/her written 10 minute play and will have the opportunity to direct their play utilizing actors from SALT Academy and Performing Arts Co. All works will be showcased on the last day and one will be chosen to perform for our Theater Awards Night.
Writing and Directing Camp 201Ages 12+
Prerequisite: Writing and Directing Camp 101
1) Write a compelling monologue and perform it, or ask someone from SALT Academy and Performing Arts Co. to perform it. One monologue will be chosen to be presented at Theater Awards Night.
2) Using the concepts learned, each student will provide the basic draft of a 30-minute play and pitch the concept to and receive critique from the class. The instructor will work together with each student to construct a comprehensive script using elements of building a good story. The story will be completed out of class time and is to be submitted to the instructor by July 16th electronically.
The instructor will meet with each student who submits their manuscript on time, critique and give feedback. The student then finalizes their script and submits the final to the instructor by July 30th. The scripts will be independently reviewed. A script will be chosen to be performed on the SALTWORKS stage as an independent production running for 2 shows, 1 weekend in the early Fall term.

SALT PAC Camp
SALTPAC is the elite performing group for SALT. They are chosen by audition on how well they perform material given to them during SALTPAC Week. SALT holds a week long high intensity (some lovingly say grueling) boot camp for those who are interested and then on Friday night, auditions are held to choose the new members. Much is required of our SALTPAC members, including being the face of SALT to the community by performing during the year and volunteering to assist in SALT programs. To become a SALTPAC member, a performer must demonstrate proficiency in 1 of the 3 areas, Singing, Dancing and/or Theater (Drama/Comedy) and a high ability/aptitude in the other 2. They must have a high level of commitment to the program.
Introducing SALTPAC ORIGINS
ORIGINS is designed to build proficient SALTAC members to the highest level of skills required to perform regularly as representatives of SALT. Origins members will be full-fledged members of SALTPAC, will be required to wear and fund-raise for their gear and jackets and will perform as SALTPAC but to a lesser degree until their skills are ready. They must have ability in 1 of the areas of performance and show some aptitude for the other 2.
In one week all “Newbies” auditioning for SALTPAC and ORIGINS, together will learn a full musical theater number, monologue, solo, group comedy skit, hip hop dance, a lyrical dance and how to work under pressure. You should be prepared to study at home to keep up. The camp is open to 12 years old and up and anyone interested should sign up quickly, space is limited.
Amateur HourAges 8+
Each year SALT invites students’ ages 8 and up to participate in a short summer program designed with creative fun as the number one priority. As they go through the program, each student has the opportunity to showcase their individual talents in any or all elements of performance - singing, dancing and theatre.
The students are invited to come with their own material to be evaluated and in most cases performed. Not all students wish to come with their own material so the students suggests fun ideas during the first session. Material is developed by those in the class and/or provided by the directors.
At the end, the entire class performs a high energy and mini-spectacular variety show that has become a SALT tradition, kicking off the new fall season with a bang.
